First, a cushion in the Swedish Röllakan weaving technique, late 18th century. Secondly, a two-panel Aksaray Kilim rug from Anatolia, also 18th century⁣. Could you tell the difference?

🌎 Kilim and Röllakan are similar weaving techniques. This type of ancient, pattern-making flat weaves have appeared in different cultures, on different continents through time, seemingly independent of each other.⁣ Many symbols and ways of making are shared and occur over and over across the world long before the modern era of globalization, and currently, total mashup remix internet era #morethatunitesusthandividesus ⁣

This beautiful darning sampler is made with silk embroidery on a cotton fabric and dated 1836, bequest Gertrud M. Oppenheimer. You can find it in the @cooperhewitt museum.

#handknitting, you say? 👉 A Patent Model for a Knitting Machine from 1872.

The mechanization of the textile industry was the catalyst for the industrial revolution. It also set in motion a patent frenzy, including this highly figural circular knitting machine model by Francis M. Comstock. Its function was to produce seamless tubes, as seen in the nylon stockings of the 20th century.
